Other Project Presentation

I learned from looking at other progect presentations how many different opportunities there are to incorporate technology in the classroom. I realized how creative you can be with it, and how much more interesting and beneficial it makes the lessons. I learned that some technology requires more work and that some depend a lot on what resources you have in your classroom. You can tell a lot about how much technology is used in the classroom by looking at the student's faces when you use it.

Peer's Presentations

One thing I learned about technology integration from my peer's presentations was, really look and see what kind of things are out there and what possibilities you have. One of the lessons involved finding a website online that helped teach simple machines. I haden't seen anything like this. It made me realize that there are a lot of cool resources out there that can be used to enhance a lesson. Another idea that I got is to really get the students involved with the technology. If they get to participate in it then they get to have a hands on experience, they learn a new technology, and they will understand the concepts all the better. It is also much more engaging and motivating if they get to play an active part.

Doing part of Internet Safety

For this part of the internet safety, I talked to both my mom and my dad. I was surprised to find that when I asked them what they knew about one of the internet saftety issues, they said they didn't really know a whole lot. The internet safety issue that I talked to them about was cyberbullying. I told a story about a young boy that committed suicide because of it that I learned about on one of the videos I watched. We then just talked about some of the things that can be done to help prevent that and be aware of it. I also shared what I learned about opposing evil from President Hinkley's talk. We discussed the four ways to not shrink from evil. It went well, and was a positive experience.

IP&T 287 Reading Reflection

1. I read "Opposing Evil" by President Gordon B. Hinkley from the November 1975 ensign.

2. I learned that although the world is filled with a lot of filth in the media, there is still hope, we can make a choice of whether or not we will let it take over and destroy our lives. President Hinkley, before giving four ways to oppose evil, shared his optimism, hope and faith in the people in this land and others. It was a really good example to not let the evil things in the world adn media bog us down. We can shrink not and set an example within our families and communities by choosing uplifting media.

3. President Hinkley gave four ways to oppose evil. As a future parent/teacher of youth I will need to make sure I start with myself. I will make sure that I am living an honest, true, chaste, benevolent, and virtuous life. I will make sure I train a better generation for a better tomorrow. I can do this by making sure that either my students or children are surrounded by good, uplifting media. I can also set a good example of someone who has chosen to surround themselves in positive media and has been blessed because of it. Third, I can build public sentiment with a few earnest voices. It is important to stand up in your community and support that which is good. It is okay to voice your opinion on certain issues concerning the media. Play an active role in helping promote uplifting media in the community. Finally, fourth, I can enlist in the strength of God. I can put on the whole armor of God and be protected from the distruction bad media can bring. With his help I can overcome and oppose all evil.

4. I can have a positive influence on family and friends by setting a good example. I can get my strength from the Lord and stand up for what I know is right. They can see me participating in good, uplifting media, and know that I won't participate in anything that offends the spirit.

Technology Lesson

The first part of my technology lesson took place yesterday and the rest of it took place today. My lesson was on plants, their parts and their life cycle. Yesterday, March 23, we looked at the plant cycle. At the end of the lesson I had students draw and create their own plants. Their plants had to have all four parts, a root, stem, leaf and flower. To help them see how different plants can be I prepared a powerpoint that showed the huge variety that is out there. I also hoped that it would get their imaginations and creativity going. I didn't want all of their plants to look the same and they didn't, at all! Today, we learned about the life cycle of a plant. To help them get an idea and better understanding of what the different stages look like I made another powerpoint presentation of the different stages. Each slide was a stage and consisted of pictures of what the plant would look like at that point. I found that bringing out that technology and having those visual examples really motivated and captivated the students. It really helped hold their attention.

Technology Enhanced Lesson

An idea for a technology enhanced lesson that I had, used powerpoint and photo story. For a unit on plants I thought it might be fun to do a power point presentation on the different parts of the plant and the life cycle of plants. If we did an experiment on the things plants need to grow, we could chart our results and observations and then make charts and graphs based on that information on microsoft excel. I thought it would also be fun to use photo story to take pictures of the experiment and of all of the different plants and the kids participating in it and create a digital story out of it. At the end of the unit the class could watch it. It would be a great way to summarize the experiment and all that they had learned.

Technology Inventory

It was really interesting to be able to find out how much access to technology teacher's have in the district and school that I am doing my practicum in. Our school has a great computer lab and computers is one of their specialties. For a third of the year students get to spend about 40-50 minutes working in the computer lab. I was amazed to find out that the school has only one smartboard in it and it is in the sixth grade classrooms. I learned that it is possible to get some technologies through the district but it looks like it takes a bit of effort. In the lab there is a scanner, a printer, and a dvd burner. The computers are macs and have have microsoft office, google earth, firefox/safari, and timez attack on them.
As for the classroom there is one TV, a CD player, and an overhead projector. There are no computers for the children to use. The teacher does have a laptop and is capable of getting internet. It is weird not being able to have a projector that you can connect to a computer. I really wish there was because there is so much you can do with that. I also think that it would be very beneficial to have a camera or video camera. Overall there isn't a ton of technology provided inside the classrooms. It will be good to learn how we can get access to it and then apply it into our lessons.

The content for this lesson is found in the 5th grade social studies core curriculum under standard 4 objective 1b. Students are to examine causes and consequences of important events in the United States expansion such as the Louisiana purchase, Lewis and Clark expiditions, treaties with Indians, and California gold rush. This lesson will provide students with an opportunity to see how each of these factors influence westward expansion and the prices that were paid for that expansion.

Pedagogy:

Students will learn about westward expansion of the United States in a very hands on, and visual way. We will talk about westward expansion as a class and then let students go and find out for themselves what things helped the U.S. expand. By having this hands on experience and being able to discover the information on their own, students will be able to really feel like the information is theirs and it can more easily be personalied and remembered.

Technology:

The technology that this lesson will use is Google Earth. I will be creating a virtual tour to lead students through the different causes and consequences of westward expansion. This program allows easy access to resources such as wikipedia, pictures and different paths. Students will be able to retrieve all of the information they needed for the assignment and will be able to do so in a more visual and hands on way.

Content
The content of this lesson is found from the Utah Core Curriculum for Language Arts. It is objective 2 and objective 6. Objective 2 includes developing language through viewing media and presenting and objective 6 involves writing in different genres. We will be fulfilling the first objective by creating a digital story and the second objective by working with a poem.

Pedagogy
For the pedagogy, students will be doing poetry interpretation. They will work together in groups and pick a poem that they would like to work with and interpret. They will be able to show how they interpret the poem through their digital story of it. This supports the content knkowledge because it provides students with a different genre of writing.

Technology
For this lesson, students will be making digital stories and using the program photo story to make them. They will be working with a poem, one of the genres of writing, and will be using it to develop their language skils through making and presenting a media presenting their stories with the rest of the class.

Content:
The content for this lesson was the 4th grade standard 5, objective 2 which is: describe the common plants and animals found in Utah enviornments and how these organisms have adapted to the enviornment in which they live.

Pedagogy:
The pedagogy used in this lesson is teaching students to classify, organize and recognize. By teaching students how to do this, and by doing it with students, they will be able to use those skills later on, and better understand the information being taught.

Technology:
The technology used in this lesson was kidspiration. It was a great tool in being able to classify and describe the organisms the students would decide to work with. It is hands on and makes it possible for students to actually see how things are organized and what certain organisms have in common with the other organisms they are classified with.

Tech Savvy Teacher

An effective teacher knows how to use the resources surrounding him or her. Technology is one of the greatest tools a teacher can use as it is constantly growing providing new opportunities. It is a way to reach all students in new and creative ways and provides hands on experiences to help master the subject. An example of this technology is using Kidspiration. We chose 4th grade standard 5 objective 2: Describe the common plants and animals found in Utah environments and how these organisms have adapted to the environment in which they live.

Our first step in this process was to identify common plants and animals found in different habitats in Utah. These habitats were wetlands, forests, and deserts. We use an activity on Kidspiration where students selected animals and plants and had to put them in the correlating habitat. This allowed them to brainstorm different possible environments familiar animals live in. Then next task was to create their own web of plants and animals found in the three habitats
in Utah.

After completing the brainstorm activity of the different characteristics. The teacher does a mini lesson where she or he talks about the different habitats and what lives in each. To assess the students learning we have them go back to the Kidspiration and have them write specific animals characteristics that allow particular plants and animals to live in specific environments.

This technology helped students predict and classify different plants and animals into specific environments found in Utah. Kidspiration allowed students to participate using their hands and acts as a visual representation of what they are studying.

The first picture is of the final product, or the final web that students will create. It is categorized into three habitats and includes weather, animals and plants in each group.

The second picture is of the chart that students will write why they put each organism where they did and in what ways it has adapted to its enviornment.


The third picture is of the beginning stages of the new concept map. It shows how the students will go about making it.

The fourth picture shows how students will begin the activity by sorting different plants into different habitats.

Science/Math Technology

One of the technologies I explored in class was the digital microscope. I thought it was really cool how it would hook up to the computer so that you could not only take pictures of the items being viewed but also take videos. It was a lot of fun to use and you could see a lot of different items very well and magnified at different levels. Students could use them for a lot of things. I really liked the example that was shown of the ant. You wouldn't get to see something like that with out a microscope and computer program like that.

TPACK

TPACK stands for technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge. I learned that this is using technology to enhance teacher's methods and strategies of pedagogical, content knowledge. It is so important to use all of these different knowledges in combination because it creates a whole and completed learning experience. Using technology can help us as teachers and our classes experience and explore things that we wouldn't otherwise be able to experience without it. It is also a great opportunity for students who are hands on learners to really become apart of what they are trying to learn. With the way technology is developing and constantly growing in today's world it is so important to use it in the classroom not only to help the students learn but also to help familiarize them with all of the technology that is out there to help them. The more they can learn to use technology in the classroom and the more teachers use it, the better off both will be.

Web 2.0 and RSS

I was really excited to learn about web 2.o and RSS. I really had no idea about any of these things and I look forward to using them in the future. I learned that a lot of resources used by teachers and others can be shared through Web 2.0. It is a great way to stay connected with others in your field and that hold similar interests. It enhances communication, information sharing and collaboration. I was really excited to learn about RSS Feeds. I learned that instead of having to go out and search for information, you can use RSS to pick the information you specifically want and then have it sent to you. I had no idea that most websites have an RSS. As a teacher I can use Web 2.0 and RSS to stay updated and connected with other teachers and updating and changing information. It is also a great way to have quick and easy access to useful resources.

Technological Background

Well I would have to say that my technological background is probably average. It isn't the best it could be but I am capable of getting by with the knowledge I do have. Throughout my education I have been required to take certain classes that have helped develop my understanding and use of technology. The one that specifically comes to mind is the one I took in high school. In it I gained skills to help me better use the programs in Microsoft office. I learned a lot from that class and it has greatly benefited me through out my continuing education. Although I have learned a lot of skills pertaining to technology, I find myself constantly hitting road blocks, where I get stuck and can't complete an assignment or project because I am not completely aware of how to work something. I am currently working at a copy center on campus and it has been interesting to see how technology is used in our center. We just barely bought new printers/copiers that are much more technologically advanced then the ones we had before. It has shown me how much I don't know about all that is taking place technologically and how the more I learn the better off I will be.
